Academic Stages

Academic Sections

a The ICSE Section (Classes 1 to 10)

Prepares students for the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Examination held at the end of Class X. The curriculum includes English (Literature & Language), Bengali, Hindi, History & Civics, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Application, Economics Application, Physical Education, Art, Value Education, and SUPW.

b The ISC (+2) Section (Classes 11 & 12)

Accepts students who have passed ICSE and prepares them for the Indian School Certificate Examination. Streams offered include Science and Humanities, comprising English, Modern English, Bengali, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Biology, Computer Science, Political Science, Geography, Sociology, History, Economics, and Physical Education.

Medium of Instruction, Assessment & Development

Medium of Instruction:

Bishop Morrow School, Krishnagar, is an English Medium School. Every effort is made to teach students to handle English effectively as both a written and spoken language. All students must speak only in English within the school campus.

Continuous Assessment:

The academic year is structured to ensure continuous assessment, regular feedback, and thorough preparation for board evaluations. The assessment cycle comprises the following examinations:

Unit 1 Examination: The first periodic assessment held during the academic term to evaluate students' initial grasp of the coursework.

Half-Yearly Examination: A comprehensive mid-term evaluation covering the syllabus taught up to that point in the academic year. (Note: All school dues must be cleared and admit cards obtained prior to this exam).

Unit 2 Examination: The second periodic assessment following the mid-term break, designed to monitor ongoing academic progress.

Annual Examination: The cumulative final examination held at the conclusion of the academic year, which, alongside continuous assessments and attendance, determines promotion to the next class.

Pre-Board Examinations (Classes X & XII): Dedicated exclusively to students in Classes 10 and 12, these comprehensive examinations simulate final board conditions to thoroughly test readiness and build confidence for the ICSE and ISC board examinations.

Co-Curricular & Personal Development:

The student's personality, initiative, and originality are given full scope through creative activities and involvement in sports and games. The school will offer different certificates at the completion of various co-curricular activities.

Important: Students must keep these certificates safely. There is no provision for issuing duplicate certificates.

Social Education:

Bishop Morrow School aims to contribute to the building of a more just society. We promote systematic social education, and SUPW (Socially Useful Productive Work) / Community Service projects form an integral part of the school curriculum.

Club System:

The school maintains a robust Club System to further encourage student engagement and specialised skill development.

Nursery Curriculum: The Foundations of Learning

At the Nursery level, our goal is to foster a love for learning by nurturing curiosity and confidence. Our curriculum is designed to balance structured academic exposure with play-based discovery, ensuring every child transitions smoothly into their formative school years.

1. Language & Literacy

Developing the Building Blocks of Communication:

We introduce children to the world of words through fun, interactive methods.

  • Alphabet Mastery: Recognition and formation of upper and lower-case letters.
  • Phonetics: Introducing letter sounds to build early reading readiness and confidence.
  • Vocabulary Building: Encouraging verbal expression through storytelling and interactive conversations.

2. Numeracy

Cultivating Logical Thinking:

We make early mathematics accessible and practical by connecting numbers to the child’s everyday environment.

  • Number Concepts: Systematic learning of numbers from 1–50, focussing on counting, identification, and sequencing.
  • Geometry in Nature: Recognising and naming basic 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) in the objects around us.

3. Environmental Studies (EVS)

Developing Awareness & Curiosity:

We encourage students to observe and appreciate the world they live in.

  • Self-Awareness: Helping students identify their identity, family, and personal preferences.
  • The World Around Us: Learning about community helpers, seasons, plants, animals, and the importance of nature conservation.

4. Creative Arts

Encouraging Self-Expression:

Art serves as a primary tool for emotional and intellectual expression in our young learners.

  • Visual Arts: Developing fine motor control and aesthetic sense through guided colouring and free-hand drawing.
  • Rhythmic Language: Using nursery rhymes and songs to improve listening skills, enhance memory, and build an intuitive understanding of language rhythm.

5. Physical Activity

Building Coordination & Confidence:

We emphasise physical health as the foundation for academic success.

  • Motor Skills Development: Engaging in exercises that improve both fine motor skills (such as pincer grasp and block building) and gross motor skills (such as running, balancing, and throwing).
  • Play-Based Learning: Participating in structured games that teach teamwork, sportsmanship, and the importance of staying active.

L.K.G. & U.K.G. Curriculum: The Foundational Years

Transition from Nursery to the L.K.G. and U.K.G. programs, the curriculum shifts toward developing more structured academic habits while maintaining the joy of discovery. This stage is critical for preparing children for primary school, focussing on fluency, mathematical readiness, and core values.

1. Communication & Literacy

Developing Proficiency in Language:

Language is the key to all learning. Our focus is on building strong foundations in both English and the regional language.

  • English: We emphasise structured reading and writing skills, helping children move from letter recognition to word formation, sentence construction, and reading fluency.
  • Vernacular (Bengali/Hindi): We introduce the mother tongue to ensure students stay connected to their cultural roots. This includes the recognition of alphabets, basic reading, and verbal communication in Bengali/Hindi.

2. Mathematical Readiness

Building Logical Thinking:

Transition from abstract play to concrete mathematical understanding.

  • Pre-Math Concepts: Students learn about spatial relationships, sequencing, patterns, and classification.
  • Operations: We introduce numbers with depth, focusing on number sense and the mechanics of arithmetic, progressing from basic counting to simple, practical addition and subtraction.

3. Environmental & General Awareness

We encourage students to look outward and engage with the world around them through observation and inquiry.

  • Nature Study: Exploring the wonders of the natural world—plants, animals, seasons, and weather—to foster a sense of curiosity and environmental stewardship.
  • General Knowledge: Expanding the child’s world view through lessons on community, health, safety, and the world beyond their immediate surroundings.

4. Creative Expression

We provide a canvas for children to express their ideas and emotions.

  • Art & Craft: Developing fine motor skills and creativity through drawing, coloring, clay modeling, and paper craft.
  • Music: Engaging in rhythm, singing, and movement to enhance auditory skills and emotional well-being.

5. Value Formation

Class I & II Curriculum: The Primary Years

Transitioning from the foundational years to the primary stage, Bishop Morrow School focuses on strengthening core academic competencies while broadening the student's perspective. 1. Languages

English & Vernacular Proficiency:

4. Holistic Enrichment

All-rounded Development:
  • Computer Studies: Early exposure to digital literacy, teaching basic terminology and responsible use.

Primary Academic Program: Classes III, IV & V

Middle School Curriculum: Classes VI, VII & VIII

The curriculum for Classes VI, VII, and VIII marks a pivotal transition into Middle School. At this stage, students move from generalised primary learning to specialised academic disciplines, fostering independent inquiry, critical analysis, and a deeper engagement with their faith and values.

  • Value Education / Catechism: Deepening moral foundations. Catholic students participate in Catechism, all students engage in Value Education to deliberate on ethical dilemmas.
  • Art & Physical Education: Balanced life through creative expression, physical endurance, teamwork, and athletic discipline.

Secondary Academic Program: Classes IX & X (ICSE)

At Bishop Morrow School, the secondary years are dedicated to academic rigour, critical inquiry, and preparation for future scholastic endeavours. Our curriculum is aligned with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), ensuring that students develop a deep understanding of their subjects while cultivating the discipline required for board-level assessments.

Subject Groupings

Group I: Compulsory Subjects

Internal Assessment & Holistic Formation

Senior Secondary Academic Program: Classes XI & XII (ISC)

The ISC curriculum at Bishop Morrow School allows students to specialise in their areas of interest, cultivating the academic rigour and independent research skills required for university-level success.
